Churchyard, a lawyer by profession, often inscribed his childrens' names on the reverse of his paintings. This was a precaution against potential arguments over his will. He had three sons, Charles, Isaac and Thomas; and seven daughters Ellen, Emma, Laura, Anna, Bessie, Kate and Harriet.
