Lot Essay

Based upon a card table with related carving and bearing the label of Stephen and Moses Young, this candlestand is attributed to their shop (Sotheby's New York, October 25, 1992, lot 439). On the basis of the labelled table, a candlestand in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art is similarly attributed (unpublished, on view at the Museum in the Richmond Room). A closely related table with similar baluster carving and curled termini on the waterleaf-carved legs is attributed to Duncan Phyfe and illustrated in Sack, American Antiques from Israel Sack Collection, vol. 9, p. 2527, P6180.
