Lot Essay

Original coupled with a note inscribed, "Eda Barnes, Barnesville, Ohio," this quilt may have been made by, for, or most likely, was once owned Eda Barnes. Constructed and comprised of fabrics typical of mid-19th century work, the quilt also features coxscomb, a popular flower at mid-century. Nonetheless, local genealogical records do not reveal anyone by the name of Eda Barnes, or a similar name, in Barnesville until 1908. In that year, "Adda" Barnes organized a quilt exhibition for the town. For further information, see George and Berman, Living with Quilts, p. 157.
