Each formed in the George II style as an open shell, with gadrooned and wavy border, the fluted sides pierced with scrolls and stylized foliage, set on three cast dolphin feet, the overhanging scroll handle formed as a mermaid issuing from entwined dolphins and seaweeds, each marked on base

Lot Essay

These baskets are based upon the George II shell-form baskets produced by silversmiths including Paul de Lamerie, William Cripps, Phillips Garden, Edward Wakelin and Thomas Gilpin. A pair of 1758 shell-form baskets by William Cripps, sold at Christie's, New York, October 23, 2000, lot 229.
