Lot Essay

Comparable drawings by La Chambre, in the same medium and also depicting wildfowl, are in the British Museum and the Kupferstichkabinett, Berlin, M. Royalton-Kisch, 'Fowl play? From van Borssom to Quina and La Chambre', Master Drawings, 1998, 1, pp. 49-50, figs. 8-9 and no. 20. La Chambre, Master of the French School in St. Ursulasteeg in Haarlem, seems to have been influenced by Melchior d'Hondecoeter, but was probably taught by his father, a printmaker and schoolmaster.
