engraving with aquatint and hand-coloring, 1830, on J Whatman dated 1830, trimmed within platemark at the left and right margins, closely trimmed at the top and bottom margins, with central horizontal fold (reinforced on the reverse), offsetting, minor surface soiling
Formerly believed to be a distinct species, Audubon distinguished it as "Harlan's" hawk. Today, this hawk is regarded as a variable dark race of the Red-tailed Hawk.
