A PAINTED PAPER AND IVORY FAN
Later 18th or early 19th century
A folding fan supported on carved ivory sticks, painted in a colorful palette with a classical scene showing a couple seated in landscape, one servant offering them a tray of fruit and another a goblet of punch from the bowl which rests on a pediment to one side, a lady nearby holding a blue and white vase, on the reverse a Western landscape in muted blue and green tones
11 7/8in. (30cm.) high with handle

Lot Essay

One of a small group of fans painted in Canton, undoubtedly to special order, following fashionable Western paintings of the day. N.J. Irons in Fans of Imperial China, Hong Kong 1982 discusses the high quality of this group and says "...it seems certain that many were painted by the leading artists of the day".
