A RARE FAMILLE ROSE AND GRISAILLE SHIPPING BOWL
Circa 1780
Enamelled on the exterior in a rich famille rose palette with two large Chinese garden scenes showing noble families enjoying leisure pursuits, in between two small Meissen style outdoor scenes in grisaille, iron-red and sepia beside smaller vignettees in iron-red or puce, all reserved on the gilt vine ground, in the interior a finely painted British ship in tones of grisaille and sepia, small figures on deck and others approaching in a longboat, all on a frothy sea off cliffs

Illustrated by Hervouet et Bruneau, op. cit., p. 43 and sold Sotheby's London, 10 February 1970, lot 143. The above authors identify the scene as off the Isle of Wight; another observer has suggested that it may show the 'Old Harry Rocks' off the harbor at Poole
