The center with the arms of Martin within a roundel, repeated four times around the rim and all reserved on a ground of poeny vine bearing curling tendrils and small blue or iron-red leaves, on the back a lingzhi fungus mark in underglaze blue within a double circle
15¾in. (39.9cm.) diam.

Lot Essay

Made for Matthew Martin, captain of the East Indiaman Marlborough, at Canton in 1716. D.S. Howard, op. cit., p. 176, relates that for saving his ship and its very valuable cargo on the return journey Martin was awarded a 'magnificent' gold medal set with 24 large diamonds and 1000 pounds, a quite significant sum at that time
