Lot Essay

A number of members of the Hamilton family, relations of the Dukes of Hamilton and the Earls of Abercorn, were involved in the China trade, including Sir Alexander Hamilton, managing owner of 8 ships at Canton 1780-1801, and Captain William Hamilton, managing owner of the Malabar, at Canton 1798; and several ordered Chinese export porcelain services with this crest and motto.
