Continental, early 18th century
Chain-stitched in coloured silks with a scene from the Life of St. Francis Xavier, the saint kneeling by the seashore to receive his crucifix which is retrieved by a crab, with six native dignitaries behind and ships out at sea, framed and glazed

Lot Essay

Saint Francis Xavier (1506-52) was known as the "Apostle of the Indies" and was based at Goa. As here, artists - including Poussin - often failed to distinguish between the native American "Indian" and the Indian of Asia.
