Cast after the original by Jean-Antoine Voltaire, depicted seated in robes and wigless, on a stepped rectangular gilt and patinated base -- 14in. (35.5cm.) high overall

Lot Essay

Houdon was widely recognised as the foremost French sculptor of the late 18th century, and was particularly lauded for his portraiture. His Voltaire Seated was exhibited at the Salon in Paris in 1781, having been a private commmission from the writer's neice. It is now housed in the Louvre
