The present work is one of a large number of stormy seascapes that were once attributed to Marco Ricci. Now re-assessed and convincingly given to Antonio Marini by Moretti (L. Moretti, 'Risarcimento di Antonio Marini', Scritti di storia dell'arte in onore di Federico Zeri, Milan, 1984, II, pp. 787-800) they include the pair of painting in the Museo Civico, Bassano del Grappa (L. Muti and D. de Sarno Prignano, Antonio Marini Pittore, Rimini, 1991, pp. 225-228, nos. 66-7) and Shipping in a Storm, formerly in the Marcos collection, sold Christie's, New York, 11 January 1991, lot 67 ($77,000).
