Lot Essay

The present work may once have been paired with another work also bought from the Lorimer collection by Captain Baillie for Sir James Lowther (J. Smith, op. cit., Supplement, no. 54, a 'capital picture', and C. Hofstede de Groot, op. cit., no. 864). On the basis of transparencies, Prof. W. Maier-Preusker has rejected that attribtuion to Philips Wouwerman (written communication, 23 November 2000).
