We are grateful to Dr. Hella Robels (private communication, 3 May 2000) and Mr. Fred Meijer of the Rijksbureau voor Kunsthistorisches Documentatie, The Hague, for confirming the attribution of the present work to Frans Snyders on the basis of photographs. The composition can be compared to two other still lifes depicting grapes in a basket on a ledge, one in a private collection, Neuilly-sur-Seine, the other offered at Sotheby's, London, 4 April 1984, lot 235 (see H. Robels, Frans Snyders. Stilleben-und Tiermaler 1579-1657, Munich, 1989, nos. 106 and 107). Dr. Robels has suggested a dating of this group to circa 1610-15.
