It is recorded in the Golden Legend that, during the persecution of the Christians under Domitian, Saint John was thrown into a vat of boiling oil, from which he emerged miraculously unharmed. The chapel of San Giovanni in Olio outside the latin gate of Rome marks the supposed site of the scene.
