Lot Essay

The design, often confused with the 'Kylin' or 'Dragon in Compartments' pattern, is based on a Chinese famille verte pattern of the early 18th century or Kangxi period. However, the Worcester factory took liberties with the palette in which it was produced. See Simon Spero and John Sandon, Worcester Porcelain 1751-1790, The Antique Collector's Club, 1996, no. 193 for a discussion of the pattern and the two bishops from whom it may take its name.
