A GEORGE I BLACK AND GILT-JAPANNED BUREAU-CABINET
In the manner of Giles Grendey, circa 1720 and extensively re-decorated in the early 19th century
In two sections, the broken arched pediment with turned vasiform finials to each corner and to the center, above arched doors with shaped panels, enclosing a range of pigeonholes and drawers with columnar document slides, secret compartments and drawers above two candle slides and a slant front, opening to reveal a red-leather inset writing surface and a range of pigeonholes and drawers and a door flanked by columns over two short and two long drawers, on bracket feet, decorated overall with landscape vignette with figures and exotic animals and pavilions, inscribed in white chalk 7304-191, handles replaced, the later locks stamped HOBBS AND CO. LONDON/MACHINE/MADE/LEVER, lower lock stamped SECURE PATENT LEVER
