Each incurved tablet crestrail with scrolled acanthus rounded corners on reeded waisted uprights, the buttoned and close-nailed burgundy leather-upholstered U-form seat above a plain apron, on anthemion-headed faceted tapering legs with ball feet, with the white chalk inscription 1258 (8) (8)

Lot Essay

The design of the seat-rail and knees of this set of chairs, with the anthemion carving to the angles relate them to the set of twenty-four chairs supplied to William, 2nd Baron Bolton for Hackwood, sold Christie's House Sale, Hackwood Park, 20th-22nd April 1998, lot 158.
Although the Hackwood set are unusually early, a Gillows Memorandum lists them in May 1813, they are an ornate version of a type of dining chair that was to dominate Gillows production in the 1820's and 1830's.
