A PAIR OF GEORGE II MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS*
Circa 1750, possibly Irish, the splat to one chair 19th-century, the stiles to the other chair replaced
Each acanthus-sheathed scrolled crestrail above a pierced acanthus and rocaille-sheathed splat, flanked by curved supports, above a flaring padded drop-in seat covered with 19th-century gros-point needlework with flowering foliage on a blue ground, above acanthus-sheathed bracket top cabriole legs with ball-and-claw feet, with pegged construction, the chair with later splat with a repaired splice to each stile (2)

Lot Essay

The carving to the front of the seatrail of each of the chairs on offer is remniniscent of that on the side seatrails of the set of ten George II mahogany dining chairs possibly supplied to Sir George Savile, 7th Bt., for Rufford Abbey, Nottinghamshire, sold Christie's London, 8 July 1993, lot 87.
