Lot Essay

Ronald Feltkamp will include this painting in his forthcoming van Rysselberghe catalogue raisonné.

By the mid-1890s, van Rysselberghe's pointillist researches had reached their maturity. His synthesis of Seurat's lessons in optical mixture - the juxtaposition of small dots of complementary hue designed to fuse in the spectator's eye - served him well in his preferred genres of landscape and, unusually for an artist of the divisionist vanguard, portraiture.
