Aleksandra Ekster (Exter) was among the pioneers of Modern stage design. Between 1916 and 1921, she designed the set and costumes for three plays for the Karmenyi Theatre in Moscow, Romeo and Juliet being her last production for them. The first International tour of 1923 introduced her work to France, Germany and Italy, where it was greeted with enthusiasm by artists such as Léger and the Futurists. The present work was probably used as a model in the courses on stage design Exter gave in Russia and later in Paris, to where she moved in 1924.
