Lot Essay

"I am gradually beginning to realise" Kirkeby once wrote "that all of my paintings have to do with holes, or caves. Holes in matter, like living in a cave and looking out. Or looking into a cave. These weird, vertiginous glances right though solid matter...." This would indicate a romantic tendency in the artist's approach to painting, as in the present work, he evokes Nordic mythology and legends - a world of nature and magical powers. Thus his seemingly abstract paintings are imbued with a sense of the natural world and at the same time a very strong sense of the artist's personal history, his evocations and mythology.
