LE PUPILLE
Stefano Rizzi and Elisabetta Geppetti are a husband and wife team whom one might suspect are as passionate about the soil which they work as they are about each other. Working in the Magliano in Toscana zone in the southern-most growing zone of Tuscany, they grow their grapes in soil which is richer than their neighbours to the north in Montalcino. Given the greater average heat index of the region, they are able to obtain high levels of extract. Cabernet Sauvignon proclaims the full potential of this soil in Saffredi. Saffredi combines the power of Cabernet with the supple Merlot and well structured Alicante. The wine is a tremendous exponent of the power of the terroir. Le Pupille is an apt interpreter. It would seem that the potential would be for the wine to be large and clumsy. Rather, it is layered with delicate soil-induced flavours and soft aromas, balancing extract with tannin. The only bad thing that one can say is that there is very little of it to go around!
