MANZONE
The history of the Manzone estate dates to its establishment in 1925 by present owner Giovanni Manzone's grandfather. Vineyards on the Gramolere hill were acquired in 1970 and the first estate bottling released shortly after. Vineyard location at 400 - 500 meters in Monforte d'Alba ranks among the highest altitude in all Barolo. The Gramolere hill boasts a particular soil that provides natural low yields (without thinning or extensive pruning) and a distinctively perfumed and complex, powerful wine comparable in longevity to the wines of Serralunga. The often exotic and high-toned aromas of red fruits, currants, cherries, and blood orange offer provocative contrast to the black fruits common in most Baroli; on the palate the wines display a silky, racy quality. The overall impression tends to a more Burgundian profile. Depending on the vintage, up to three Baroli may be produced : Le Gramolere, Bricat Gramolere (hilltop location), and a Riserva (in the greatest vintages.) The 1990 Barolo Le Gramolere "de Grazia Cuvie" was described as "nearly perfect" by Robert Parker , Jr.
