EINAUDI
When Italians hear the name Einaudi they do not generally think of Barolo; they think of politics. Luigi Einaudi, who founded the winery, was the first president of unified Italy. Today his grand-daughter Paola and her husband Giorgio Ruffo maintain the estate's history and are continuing to build its reputation. The winery has 62 acres planted to vines with 10 of them being planted to Nebbiolo. Einaudi produces wines of tremendous breed and elegance. The vines rest in soils at 300 meters above sea level, in sandy, calcareous, dry soils with a limestone subsoil. Naturally, the vines are fine examples of Barolo aromatics and the wines are tremendous exponents of Einaudi's vineyard sites. The 1982 is quintessential Barolo which has not begun to show its age. It exudes territorial aromas and leads to beautifully structured Barolo flavours. 1989 is a monumental wine, which is often under-appreciated given its sibling 1990. Extraordinary concentration and depth are qualities making this vintage the legend that it is. Having expanded their vineyard holdings in 1998, all of us can rest assured that we will have the pleasure of more of Einaudi's wine in years to come.
