CASTELLO DI FONTERUTOLI
The Mazzei Family has been producing wines in Fonterutoli since 143. Today they continue to do so, as a new generation of Mazei's has taken the reins. Having started to work with enologist Carlo Ferini, the estate is producing top quality barrique aged Sangiovese. With the vines planted in the galestro soil type -- which consists of a solid rock sub-soil with calcerous topsoil -- and south to south-western exposure, Ferini is able to achieve astonishing levels of extract. The true beauty of the situation is that given levels of acidity acheivable from the soil, the wines display a beautiful equilibrium between fruit, alcohol and acidity. Perhaps this balance is most apparent in the Siepi wines, a blend of fifty percent Merlot and fifty percent Sangiovese; although this wine is only fifty percent Sangiovese, it is unmistakably a wine not only from the Chianti Classico region but also from Castellina. This remarkable characteristic speaks volumes about the power of terroir, and in particular the terroir of Fonterutoli. The Chianti Classico Riserva Castello di Fonterutoli is another example of the acheivable balance between fruit and acid. Although conderably leaner than the Siepi, it exhibits the aformentioned terroir in elegant fashion. While the 1996 displays a crips leanness, the 1995 and particularly the 1997 have both the weight and balance, which are gaining repute worldwide.
