MARCHESI DE'FRESCOBALDI
One of the largest landholding families in Europe, the Frescobaldi family owns eight properties in Chianti alone. The Chianti Rufina Montesodi is produced from a thirty-acre plot on their Nippozano estate. Given that the vineyard rests at an altitude of 1150 feet and is planted with forty-year-old vines, it yields a mere 30 hectrolitres per hectare. The resultant levels of extract are rather remarkable, particularly in vintages such as 1985, 1995 and 1997. There is a lovely balcance between the earthen flavors and extract. Mormoreto is a Cabernet Sauvignon based wine, which is grown on the 47 acre plot on the Nippozano estate. It too bears great levels of extract balanced by well integrated acidity. Although it is not a varietal, which is associated with Chianti, the Cabernet is a tremendous exponent of the terroir of Nippozano.
The Castelgiocondo Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is capably made by Niccolo d'Afflitto whose work is raising eyebrows. What is most interesting is how the 1993 is an elegant expression of the Castelgiocondo vineyard -- it deplays tremendous depth of colour and an intense aromatic profile.
Lamaione is composed of Sangiovese and Merlot, with the latter providing softness and extract. Given the range of wines produced by the Frescobaldi family, one cannot help but to be impressed.
The F&F Brunello is a joint collaboration between Frescobaldi and Gianfranco Ferre, the clothing designer, Frescobaldi making the wine and Ferre the packaging; its is a charming wine which exhibits the characteristics of the 1993 Castelgiocondo Brunello.
