BARONE RICASOLI
The Castello di Brolio has been owned by the Ricasoli family since 1141 and the castle is one of the most historically important and interesting places in Italian viticultural and political history. It is believed that the Brolio is the oldest winery in Italy to have been in continual production since the first vintage in 1141 - producing wine through periods of wars, plagues and a brief break with the papacy. It was in the vineyards of Brolio that Barone Bettino Ricasoli realized the potential of Sangiovese and codified the blend which today we recognize as Chianti. Perhaps more importantly, the document unifying Italy from North and South into the whole it is today was signed there. Today Barone Francesco Ricasoli chairs the winery, guiding it firmly into the 21st century. The wines consigned here represent an interesting historical perspective.
Vin Santo 1947 is an incredible rarity about which much has been written - indeed Robert Parker praised the wine highly when he tasted it against a range of first growth clarets. The 1947 vintage is truly great!
Casalferro is a barrique aged Sangiovese - which has been blended with some Merlot in the two most recent vintages - exhibiting a distinctly modern character. The Chianti Classico, while being from the 20th century, is a wine of which Barone Bettino would be proud.
Vin Santo--Vintage 1947
Tuscany (Gaiole in Chianti), Barone Ricasoli
All levels very top shoulder; all with binsoiled labels
Parcel: lots 752-754
Recently tasted along side several other wines from this classic univeral vintage, the 1947 Brolio Vin Santo stands out. Yes, it is extremely rare; but this wine is more than just a curiosity. NP
