CANTINA SOCIALE DI TERLANO
The Cantina Sociale di Terlano was started in 1983 by a group of farmers from the Sud Tirol town of Terlano, which was then a part of the Hapsburg Dynasty. Noted for championing both innovation and tradition, the Cantina has gained renown throughout Europe - particularly for the production of tremendously long lived white wines. Terlano rests just north of the city of Bolzano, in Northwestern Italy, at an altitude of 900 meters above sea level. Vineyards surround the town and ascend to 1,400 meters above sea level. All of the wines produced by the Cantina have an aroma particular to the area which the Cantina's vineyards encompass. The main structural component of the wines is their extremely high acidity, a result of the soils high mineral content and the extreme inclines upon which the vines grow. One of the most interesting results of the level of acidity is the capability of the white wines to age. The 1979 Pinot Bianco was produced in a manner unique to the cantina. After the malolactic fermentation, the wine was put into a glass-lined stainless-steel tank where it was held for eight years on its lees. Only three thousand bottles were produced. To this day, the Cantina continues to produce such wines in the best vintages.
