VALENTINI
Edoardo Valentini is a man committed to producing great wine, and doing so in his won manner. Working with Montepulciano and Trebbiano, he brings both of these varietals and the regional characteristics, to remarkable heights. An attorney by profession, Valentini farms 156 acres of vines, the majority of which are planted with Montepulciano. Valentini is unbelievably selective in the vineyards. Given the acreage that he has, the fact that he produces only 50,000 bottles maximum per year, speaks volumes to this fact. In the years that he deems worthy of producing wine, only five percent of the grapes he grows are turned into wine. The Montepulciano is aged for one year in cask and always sold under the title "Vecchio" or "Old". Valentini's wines have exceptional depth and richness, which is the result of intense selection in the vineyard. Always well balanced, the wines age for years, developing a comlex nuance. His 1997 Trebbiano is deep but structured, with layers of mineral and acid - an amazing achievement, given the varietal's somewhat humble repute. The 1993 Montepulciano can stand up against any great wine in the world; it is dense and structured, with intense aromatics and an incredible structure. It is inconceivable to some that Montepulciano can achieve such heights.
