ROOSEVELT, Eleanor. The Autobiography. New York: Harper & Brothers, [1961]. 8vo. Photographic illustrations. Original blue cloth.
FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, INSCRIBED BY ELEANOR ROOSEVELT TO HER SON AND DAUGHTER-IN-LAW on the half-title: "To Anne & Johnny with love Mother -- Eleanor Roosevelt Christmas 1961." Of the author's many recollections about her son John included in the book, one relating to his stay with his wife Anne and children at the White House is particularly amusing. During a conversation with his father prior to their arrival, John said: "'Be sure to order the diaper service.' Franklin, who had never heard of it, said, 'What did you say?' Johnny replied, 'The diaper service.' This bewildered his father who asked, 'Is there anything wrong with the baby? We always boiled ours.'"
