TRUMAN RETURNS A PORTRAIT OF PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT FROM THE WHITE HOUSE . Two years after taking over the Presidency following FDR's death, Truman writes concerning an exchange of portraits of the late President: "I am glad the picture arrived in good shape. I discussed the matter of the portrait of your father with your mother and she decided that if we could get the Salisbury portrait to go into The White House that you ought to have this one [the Emmet Bay Rand portrait]. It was a pleasure to send it to you."
When Harry Truman occupied the White House, the original official White House portrait of Franklin D. Roosevelt was by Ellen Emmet Rand (1876-1941). But when it was decided that the 1935 Frank O. Salisbury portrait painted in 1935 was a better likeness of FDR, Eleanor Roosevelt and Harry Truman acquired it for the White House, where it hangs today as the official White House portrait. The earlier Emmet Bay Rand portrait was returned at the suggestion of Eleanor Roosevelt to her son John A. Roosevelt, who, after many years donated it to The Franklin D. Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park in 1962.
