Lot Essay

Prince Pierre Troubetzkoy was the older brother of Paul, a noted sculptor and engraver (1866-1938). Pierre Troubetzkoy's work is exhibited at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Library, The Portrait Gallery and National Gallery in London. A companion portrait of John Roosevelt's brother, Franklin D. Roosevelt Jr., age twelve, also painted in 1927 and the pendant to ths present work is on exhibition at Springwood, Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site, Hyde Park, New York. A third portrait, also painted in 1927, of Franklin D. Roosevelt seated at a desk with a ship model in the background and given to Elliott Roosevelt was exhibited at Knoedler Gallery in 1929. All three paintings were commissioned by Sara Delano Roosevelt in 1927. Sara Delano Roosevelt was obviously drawn to Troubetzkoy's work, as her own portrait painted by him in 1900 hangs in the dining room at Springwood.
