Lot Essay

While Governor of New York from 1928-1932, it was Roosevelt's tradition to invite the minority leaders and other Democratic Legislators who exhibited curiosity and ambition to hold debates at the Executive Mansion on Mondays. As cold turkey was regular fare, this weekly session became known as the Turkey Cabinet. Later, as the gatherings grew and the turkey season came to an end, it achieved the more dignified title The Governor's School for Legislators.
