Lot Essay
This needlepoint rug was made by Mrs. Tracy Dows, the mother of Olin Dows, (see Lot 221). Mrs. Dows who lived in Rhinebeck, New York, was a friend and neighbor of Franklin D. Roosevelt. Her initials are worked into the lower right corner of the rug. It was displayed at 'Top Cottage' the hilltop retreat which Franklin D. Roosevelt built on his estate in Hyde Park in 1938. Roosevelt used 'Top Cottage' as a place to work and entertain guests, including Winston Churchill, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. 'Top Cottage' is now a National Historic Site and photographs there show the illustrious guests who visited.
