These 'tripod' frames with their antique-fluted friezes and serpentined trusses terminating in 'palm' flowered and foliated volutes and bacchic goat-hooves evolved from 'Tripod' patterns for vase-candelabra such as those published in The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1773 (Pl. VIII); the latter derived in turn from the Louis XVI 'Athenienne' tripod of the 1760's. Related stands featured in George Richardson's New Designs for Vases and Tripods decorated in the antique taste, 1793.
