Lot Essay

These 'tripod' frames with their antique-fluted friezes and serpentined trusses terminating in 'palm' flowered and foliated volutes and bacchic goat-hooves evolved from 'Tripod' patterns for vase-candelabra such as those published in The Works in Architecture of Robert and James Adam, Vol. 1, No. 1, 1773 (Pl. VIII); the latter derived in turn from the Louis XVI 'Athenienne' tripod of the 1760's. Related stands featured in George Richardson's New Designs for Vases and Tripods decorated in the antique taste, 1793.
The present pair are virtually identical to a pair sold Christie's South Kensington, London, 12 October 1994, lot 448. A related pair of tripod 'torcheres' with voluted legs and bacchic goat-hoof feet was sold Christie's London, 11 April 1985,lot 48 and another pair sold in these rooms, 22 April 1989, lot 28.
