Lot Essay

Three chairs of this model are in the public collections of Tryon Palace Historic Sites and Gardens, New Bern, North Carolina (exhibited in the Withdrawing Room). These chairs were presented by William G. Perry and Henry F. du Pont to the Tryon Palace Commission. They had been purchased from the Ruth Vanderbilt Twombly collection which was sold at Parke-Bernet Galleries in 1955 (lot 452A). It is likely that the Roosevelt chairs were sold as the previous lot and therefore originated from the same suite (see provenance listed above).
