The firm of Wilcox and Co., producers of "Burmantofts Faience" Art Pottery and Architectural Ceramics amalgamated with five other Yorkshire firms in 1889 to become the Leeds Fire Clay Company Ltd., becoming the largest clay working company in the country. "Lefco Ware" was introduced for Garden Ornaments in 1912 and was a variation on their "Marmo Faience," used for architectural wares and facings.
The present set is very rare, the only other known complete sets belong to the Marquess of Bath at Longleat House--whose collection also includes an 1865 Alice, and a set sold in Christie's New York on the 9 December 1998, from the Justin Schiller collection, originally purchased from Studio Ceramics sale at Phillips, London, 19 June 1986, lot 395.
