Lot Essay

Actress Zena Marshall worked closely with director Terence Young, when devising 'the look' for her character, Miss Taro. When choosing the costume for her intimate scenes with Bond, in Miss Taro's home, Marshall was keen to avoid anything fussy. Terence Young, apparently suggested this silk robe, which was his own, which he gave to Marshall for these key scenes. Dr.No footage of Zena Marshall as Miss Taro, reveals that the costume was adapted during filming. Initially when she is first seen in the robe, speaking to Bond on the telephone, the robe is slashed up the side seams and the sleeves have been turned back, in later scenes, the slits are no longer visible and inspection of the robe shows that they have been re-worked.

In Dr. No, Miss Taro acts as a double agent, working as a secretary for the British governor, Pleydell-Smith and as a spy for Dr. No. James Bond first comes across Miss Taro when he catches her listening at a key hole at Government House. Bond decides she bears closer investigation and suggests that she shows him around the island. Miss Taro invites Bond to collect her from her appartment in the mountains that evening. En route, Bond's suspicions about Miss Taro are clearly justified as he finds he is being pursued by a hearse and narrowly escapes death, when the hearse attempts to run him off the mountain road. Bond however foils his pursuers' plans and it is they who plummet to their deaths over a cliff edge, while he escapes and continues his journey to Miss Taro's home. Miss Taro, only recently out of the shower, is clearly astounded to see Bond at her door, and attempts to cover her amazement commenting ...I didn't expect you so soon... Bond's first advances towards Miss Taro are met with some reluctance from her, to which Bond responds ..Forgive me, I thought I was invited up here to admire the view....

Miss Taro is seen wearing the robe in this lot, initially when she answers her phone in her bedroom and invites Bond to her appartment in the mountains. Then, after receiving instructions to detain Bond for a couple of hours at her home, Miss Taro is seen wearing it while fixing her make-up at her dressing table and on the bed with the British agent, prior to changing for dinner, when the 'taxi' Bond has ordered, turns out to be the local police.
