COXHEAD, Frank A. Dunedin. Dunedin, 1860. An important early photograph album of images by Frank A. Coxhead, 1860, containing 20 mounted photographs, titled in the images, 6 3/4 x 8 3/4 inches. (Spotting to mounts and to some images, occasional rubbing to images.) Original publisher's advertisement pasted to front pastedown: "We invite inspection of our superior collection of Photo Views of the West Coast Sounds, and other Views, before purchasing elsewhere." Original green mottled cloth, gilt-lettered on cover "Dunedin 1860. Published by Frank A. Coxhead, Princes Street, Dunedin" (somewhat soiled).
AN IMPORTANT ALBUM OF NEW ZEALAND VIEWS
Coxhead was active in Dunedin from the 1860s through the 1890s. Subjects include views of Dunedin from: Bell Hill; Maitland Street; Princes Street; N.E. Valley; View Street; Bowling Street; High Street; and the Octagon. The images dramatically reveal the growth of Dunedin, which had been founded in 1848. The images depict the port and the mercantile areas of the town, as well as certain residential districts. In 1861, the year after this series was taken, gold was discovered and drastically changed Dunedin's landscape. Dunedin became New Zealand's leading city in the second half of the 19th century.
