FIRST EDITION. "Captain Erskine, in 1849, sailed from Russell, New Zealand, and reached Niue or Savage Island. He visited Manua, Tatuila, and Upolu of the Samoan Islands. Next Vavau, Lifuka, and Tonga-tabu were visited, then Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia, and Port Jackson" (Hill). The vivid descriptions of the islanders are greatly enhanced by the exceptional color plates. The map plots the course of the HMS Havannah. Hill, p.98.
