SECOND EDITION. The high regard in which Statius was held in the middle ages is witnessed in his appearance in Dante's Divine Comedy. Dante, who considered Statius a Christian, had him explain to Vergil the passages in the great poet's works which led to his Christian conversion. HC 14978; BMC V, 456; Goff S-692.
