LOCKE, John. Some Thoughts concerning Education, London: A. and J. Churchill, 1693. 8° (170 x 140mm.) (outer margin of title slightly shorter and lightly browned, corners of title, B2, B7, K2-5, and final 2 leaves repaired, occasional light spotting), half calf by Bayntun, g.e., red morocco bookplate of W. A. Foyle, Beeleigh Abbey. "FIRST EDITION", ISSUE WITH 'PATRONAGE' CORRECTLY SPELT ON A3V.
Locke's work contains "the seeds of modern developmental psychology". Two nearly identical versions of it were published in 1693, followed by the 'third' edition in 1695. Although Locke had no children, his work began as a series of letters written from Holland in 1684 to his friend Edward Clarke M.P., concerning the upbringing of Clarke's children. His view of a child's mind as a tabula rasa, and his distinctions between wit and judgement, were the subject of much discussion in the 18th century. Norman 1381; Wing L2762.
