Shadwell was a successful Restoration dramatist, perhaps unfairly remembered for his quarrel with Dryden, whom he succeeded as Poet Laureate in 1689. This selection of his plays comprises THE FIRST EDITION OF THREE COMEDIES, Epsom Wells [Arber I, 34; Wing S2843], The Woman Captain [Arder I, 370; Pforzheimer 879: 'said to have been rather successful on the stage'; Wing S2887], and The Amorous Bigotte [Arber II, 313; Wing S2835], and the second edition of two others, The Virtuoso, a satire on the Royal Society [Pforzheimer 877; Wing S2883A] and The Squire of Alsatia [Wing S2874A], both published in the same year as the first.
