Lot Essay

The exaggerated poses and elaborate costumes of the figures in this relief are typical of Flemish sculpture in the late 15th and early 16th Century, particularly centres like Brussels and Antwerp. This panel would almost certainly originally have formed part of a large altarpiece with other panels depicting the life and Passion of Christ. The recent exhibition of Flemish art (L'esplendor de Flandres - Art de Brusselles, Anvers i Malines als s. XV-XVI, Barcelona, 1999) included a number of altarpieces of this type.
