the lid carved with centralised coat of arms, surrounded by fruiting mulberry branches on a punched ground, the escutcheon carved with the head of Shakespeare, the sides with a geometric design, on bracket feet, the underside stamped GEORGE COOPER STRATFORD UPON AVON MAKER 1759 -- 7IN. THIS CASKET IS ONE OF THE MANY EXAMPLES OF SOUVENIRS MADE BY REPUTE FROM THE MULBERRY TREE WHICH GREW IN WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S GARDEN AT NEW PLACE, STRATFORD UPON AVON. GEORGE COOPER, WHOSE NAME IS RECORDED IN 1759 AS A LOCAL JOINER WHO APPARENTLY PURCHASED A PORTION OF THE UP-ROOTED TREE. A COMPARABLE TEA CADDY WAS SOLD AT SOTHEBY'S, LONDON, LOT 1, IMPORTANT ENGLISH FURNITURE, NOVEMBER 2000.
