Lot Essay

THE PRESENT FIGURE WITH ITS VIVID SENSE OF MOVEMENT, IS TYPICAL OF THE WORK OF ARTISTS WORKING IN SOUTH GERMANY IN THE SECOND HALF OF THE 18TH CENTURY. THE CONTRAPOSTO STANCE AND SWIRLING DRAPERY, AS WELL AS FACIAL EXPRESSION OF THE PUTTO, IS REMINISCENT OF THE WORK OF THE CELEBRATED IGNAZ GUNTHER (1725-1775), WHO PLAYED AN IMPORTANT ROLE IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE BAVARIAN ROCOCO AFTER HE SETTLED IN MUNICH IN 1753 UNTIL HIS DEATH.
