Lot Essay
There has been much academic debate over the Farthing of Henry VII, originating with Ruding's quote that in the reign of Henry VIII the people had difficulty in distinguishing Farthings from Halfpence until the portcullis type Farthing was introduced. Lawrence suggested that, for a period, Farthings and Halfpence were struck from the same dies, differing only in weight. North, p.100, reports divided opinion as to whether any Farthings exist at all for the reign of Henry VII. This coin struck on a small module flan from farthing dies. The inner circles, which measure 8 mm. in diameter on the Halfpenny, measure barely 6 mm.
