Lot Essay

The sovereign penny of Edward VI has been described as 'amongst the rarest coins of the English Silver series' (William Brice). The celebrated R C Lockett collection did not contain an example and for many years there were only two specimens in private hands. A third example, a perforated river find, turned up in 1982 and was sold in Spink Numismatic Circular, February 1983, no.314.
